David Verrall

David Verrall began his career at the National Film Board in 1977 following a number of years in the private sector. He has served as producer for more than 60 NFB productions. Notable examples are the Oscar®-winning short Bob's Birthday (1993), Wendy Tilby's Strings (1991), nominated for Best Short Animated Film as was When the Day Breaks (2000), co-directed by Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis.

He was a producer on Norman McLaren's award-winning Narcissus (1983) and later produced Creative Process: Norman McLaren (1990), a feature-length documentary directed by Donald McWilliams about the legendary animation pioneer. Verrall also produced Log Driver's Waltz (1979) by John Weldon and edited and co-produced The Sweater (1980), directed by Sheldon Cohen, based on the story by Roch Carrier about a young boy's passion for hockey.

As executive producer of the Animation Studio since 1996, he has contributed to other successful films such as Ryan (2004), a co-production directed by Chris Landreth and an Oscar® winner, as well as two other films both nominated for an Oscar®: Torill Kove's My Grandmother Ironed the King's Shirts (2000) and Shuibo Wang's film Sunrise over Tiananmen Square, which was nominated for Best Short Documentary.

Among the many films made in the Animation Studio over the last few years, Verrall's most recent credits include: the stereoscopic animations Falling in Love Again (2003) and June (2004) by Munro Ferguson, and Moon Man (2004) by Paul Morstad – made with SANDDE™ technology; as well as the Talespinners collection, multicultural stories for young viewers, and the ShowPeace series, short films for conflict resolution.
